Surrendering into Childs Pose

Balasana, is the pose of the child. We drape our bodies over our folded legs, representing a child in the womb. It is a resting and restorative pose that is often practiced to stretch the lower back or performed after a challenging set of postures. It offers us time to go within and gives us time to let the body and mind absorb our practice. The innocent, receptive nature of a child is reflected in this posture and is an easy place to feel transformed by our yoga practice.

We often find children to be our greatest teachers. In their innocence and simplicity we find true happiness, unconditional love and trust. They trust the world around them and feel fully secure in their surroundings. The purity of their minds are not tainted by the world we live in. A smile from a child can reach deep within to truly touch our hearts.

In Balasana we turn inward to feel free of the effects of our world. In this simple pose we go within to find our purity. With our eyes closed and our minds quite we gain a deeper understanding that our happiness does not depend upon the external world, our career’s, families, friends, and possessions. Happiness comes from a place of calm, content, quite that lies in our core.

The next time you practice Balasana invite yourself to cultivate child like qualities of innocence, security, simplicity, and happiness.
