“Open hips lead to a happy heart” is Karen Boeser’s (GMY’s Assistant Director and fabulous yoga teacher) favorite saying. It is such a part of her that nearly every one of her students has heard it and taken it to heart.

But what does it mean? “Open hips lead to a happy heart.”

Let’s start from where most of us are: tight-ish hips and poor posture. Our hips exist in a two dimensional world most of the time. We walk, sit, stand, go up and down stairs, ext. Balasana, is the pose of the child. We drape our bodies over our folded legs, representing a child in the womb. It is a resting and restorative pose that is often practiced to stretch the lower back or performed after a challenging set of postures. It offers us time to go within and gives us time to let the body and mind absorb our practice. The innocent, receptive nature of a child is reflected in this posture and is an easy place to feel transformed by our yoga practice.
