Yoga has its ups and downs
By Mindy Arbuckle, E-RYT
My husband got me into mountain biking several years ago when we were dating. I remember one of my first rides we took. It was a pretty mellow ride, a wide path, not too bumpy and pretty flat for the Rocky Mountains. I was [...]

Meditate on the heart
By Mindy Arbuckle, E-RYT

Many of us go through life with a sense of openness and love for others. We offer our love and compassion to others easily yet can find it difficult to refrain from placing conditions on that love or offering that same amount of unconditional love to ourselves.

There are [...]

Stay Balanced in the Summer Heat

July 16, 2010

The seasons are characterized by the cycles of the doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha. Maintaining good health during the four seasons of the year requires living in harmony with the seasons, their natural cycles, foods, the type of exercise we do, ext. Today we will discuss how to stay balanced in the midst of summer heat.

Summer is the season of pitta. It is hot, sharp, dry and bright. For everyone, especially those who are predominantly pitta in nature, need to stay cool this time of year to prevent aggravating pitta. The following are some recommendations for staying balanced.

Pigeon: Open Hips Lead to a Happy Heart

“Open hips lead to a happy heart” is Karen Boeser’s (GMY’s Assistant Director and fabulous yoga teacher) favorite saying. It is such a part of her that nearly every one of her students has heard it and taken it to heart.

But what does it mean? “Open hips lead to a happy heart.”

Let’s start from where most of us are: tight-ish hips and poor posture. Our hips exist in a two dimensional world most of the time. We walk, sit, stand, go up and down stairs, ext. Rarely do we move side-to-side or open our stance wider than our hips. Some women cross their legs while sitting, but that just promotes a small outer hip stretch and an imbalance in the pelvis.

GMY Cares July Donations

July 14, 2010

Green Mountain Yoga would like to thank you for your continued support of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. In June we were able to send a total of 5 boxes of fantastic snack donations to a Unit that was in need of some American comfort food. The Unit is from Kentucky and consists of 14 men and one woman. The mess hall is about a mile away from their barracks and they stated that sometimes it is so busy that they actually miss dinner. Morale was not at a high point to say the least. With your donations of everything from crackers, cookies, gummy bears, popcorn and licorice we will make them a very happy Unit indeed!

King Dancer: Let Go of Effort and Grace Flows In
By Mindy Arbuckle, E-RYT

Natarajasana is a beautiful pose in which you balance on one leg and bring the toes of the opposite legs up behind you and hold onto them behind the head. It creates a beautiful backbending circular flow of energy.

It represents the energy of Nataraja, Shiva in the form of the Lord of the Dance. Shiva is one of the Hindu trinity of gods and represents the third phase of creation: destruction/transformation. As Nataraja, Shiva is portrayed dancing on one foot with a ring of fire surrounding him. Shiva dances to the rhythm of the universe and the never ending cycle of infinity, life, death and rebirth.

Flow with Universal Energy Meditation

Flow with Universal Energy Meditation
By Mindy Arbuckle, E-RYT

Have you ever thought about what it means to flow with universal energy? To me it means to have faith, to be open and ready to receive what the world presents to you. So often we work ourselves so hard to get what we want and in the end it doesn’t meet our expectations. We have tried and pushed and forced ourselves to accomplish our goals and in the end it may or may not have worked out.
